Bolivian Youth Lead the Shift Toward a Green and Circular Economy

In today’s global context, where sustainable solutions are urgently needed, Bolivia is turning to youth-led circular entrepreneurship as a driver of transformation. With the support from Save the Children Italy and MedWaves, a pioneering initiative was launched to promote circular economy practices across the country.

Unlike the traditional linear model of “produce, use, dispose,” the circular economy aims to keep products, materials, and resources in use for as long as possible — reducing waste, reusing materials, and regenerating natural systems. This approach not only protects the environment but also generates new economic and social opportunities.

The initiative focused on strengthening organizations that support young entrepreneurs in creating circular and green business models — enterprises that embed sustainability into both their design and operations. Key methodologies were promoted, including the Green Business Model Tool and The Switchers Toolbox, which help entrepreneurs develop environmentally positive and economically viable ventures.

Main results achieved include:

  • 751 young people trained in eco-design, life-cycle analysis, and sustainable business validation.
  • 188 experts trained in circular economy methodologies developed by MedWaves.
  • 42 youth-led ventures selected and financed with seed capital, all with a circular focus: from recycling and composting to regenerative agriculture.
  • 4 regions — La Paz, Cochabamba, Santa Cruz, and Chuquisaca — developed or strengthened Entrepreneurial Ecosystems that bring together public, private, and academic actors working with youth. These spaces foster collaboration, innovation, and territorial sustainability.

Bolivia has the talent, creativity, and political will to position itself as a regional leader in circular entrepreneurship. Strategic alliances and supportive legal frameworks reinforce the sustainability of this initiative, which has nurtured a new generation of young green leaders.
